June Additional Meeting Follow Up

June Additional Meeting Swapping Mall

Our Swapping Mall was a lot of fun, but there was also serious point to it.  It’s well documented that we’ve become a ‘throw-away society’ and all too often we make purchases that we sometimes don’t ever use.  I think it’s fair to say that many of us have been guilty of this at some time or another.

Sister Healy gave the introductory talk at our meeting, and quoted Elder John A. Widtsoe:

“Relief of poverty – having what you need, both financially and materially, and knowing how to make it last as long as it is needed.”

Surely that made some of us wriggle a little in our seats!

And so, we recycled some of the ‘gently-used’ goods that we had in our homes.

Then to the Cafe to share the treats everyone had brought, and enjoy some good companionship

Just to go back to Sis Healy’s talk for a moment, which was on the subject of Provident Living, she further quoted the First Presidency – All Is Safely Gathered In:

“We encourage you wherever you may live in the world to prepare for adversity by looking to the condition of your finances. We urge you to be modest in your expenditures; discipline yourselves in your purchases to avoid debt. Pay off debt as quickly as you can, and free yourselves from this bondage. Save a little money regularly to gradually build a financial reserve”

and

“Interest never sleeps nor sickens nor dies; it never goes to the hospital; it works on Sundays and holidays; it never takes a vacation; it never visits nor travels; it takes no pleasure; it is never laid off work nor discharged from employment; it never works on reduced hours. … Once in debt, interest is your companion every minute of the day and night; you cannot shun it or slip away from it; you cannot dismiss it; it yields neither to entreaties, demands, or orders; and whenever you get in its way or cross its course or fail to meet its demands, it crushes you.”

Can you believe that this statement was first quoted in a Conference Report in 1938!

Yes, food for thought!

A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who helped organise the evening, especially those sisters who quickly stepped in to help re-organise the building after we found it otherwise occupied that afternoon by a very large group we hadn’t expected! That set off a few alarm bells!  lol

Thanks to all who came along with goodies for swapping and sharing – you made the night special!

Our sisters are the best!  🙂

The next Additional Meeting will be held on Thursday, 3rd July.
