Quick Amish Cinnamon Bread


This recipe for Amish Cinnamon Bread is a sweet, moist, cake-like loaf that’s quick and simple to make…and delicious!


  • 225g butter, softened
  • 340g granulated sugar
  • 2 medium eggs
  • 480ml buttermilk
  • 500g plain flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda

Cinnamon/sugar mixture:

  • 115g granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon


Heat oven to 180C, 160C Fan, Gas mark 4.

Cream together butter, 340g sugar, and eggs.  Add milk, flour, baking soda and combine ingredients to a stiff mixture.  Put ¼ of the mixture into each of two greased 2 lb loaf tins.

In a separate bowl mix the cinnamon/sugar ingredients together.  Sprinkle approximately ¾ of the cinnamon/sugar mix on top of the mixture in each loaf tin.  Add remaining loaf mixture to the tins and sprinkle with the last of the cinnamon/sugar mixture.

Now push a knife through the mix and gently swirl it round to incorporate the cinnamon and sugar.  Allow some of the cinnamon/sugar mix to remain on top to give a crisp crunchy topping.

Place in oven for 45-50 minutes or until an inserted skewer comes out clean.

Allow bread to cool in loaf tin for approx 20 minutes before removing.

Serve warm or cold, with or without butter.  It freezes well, and defrosts surprisingly fast, so it’s a good standby if you have guests dropping in unexpectedly.  🙂
